PONSONBY — Warm winter PJs, rather than Easter eggs, were given
to families in need by parishioners from Sacred Heart Parish, Ponsonby.
Seventy-five pairs of new pyjamas were handed over to staff at
Catholic Social Services by Sacred Heart parish pastoral council chair, Ally Hawkes, during Holy Week.
“This is our way of saying happy Easter to a lot of children who
may not have a lot,” she said. “Why give chocolate when, for around the same price, you can give a pair of warm winter pyjamas that are going to keep a child cosy at night?”
Catholic Social Services (CSS) social worker Rose Lythe said the organisation was thrilled with the donation from its next-door neighbour.
“The pyjamas will make a big difference to a lot of families. We are
very grateful for the support from Sacred Heart’s parishioners.”
The PJs have all been washed so they are ready to wear the minute they are received.
The parish supports CSS and its clients with weekly food parcels and
regular clothing collections.
“One of our goals is to support our wider community,” Ms Hawkes said.
