First NZ SMSM sister to celebrate 100th birthday

Sister Frances Marie Lagan, SMSM

by Sr PATRICIA LEAMY, SMSM
Recently, Sister Frances Marie Lagan celebrated her one hundredth birthday, the first New Zealand SMSM sister to do so. She entered the novitiate of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary (SMSM) from her home diocese of Christchurch in the 1940s. Two years ago, she celebrated 75 years of profession.

Her long and fruitful life as a sister began as a teacher in Samoa. Then she was appointed novice directress at the SMSM novitiate in Heretaunga, Hutt Valley, where she formed many women for mission on the global or local scenes.

At St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, sister taught religious studies over many years to Year 9 and 10 boys, becoming like a “school grandmother”, an advocate and source of comfort and  wisdom. She was a great one to ask for prayers.

She also worked with those on the domestic staff of the college, many of whom were from Samoa.

A great story-teller, she used this talent effectively over the years to promote mission.

Joy-filled celebrations for her 100 years took place at St Joseph’s Home of Compassion, Silverstream, her address since 2019.
