Among his many services to the community, Stuart Panapa, QSM, didn’t miss an annual meeting of the Waipatu Maori Club in Hawke’s Bay for 67 years.
Mr Panapa, who died last month, joined the club as a 14-year-old and was a past chairman and the current treasurer.
The Hastings man was also chairman of the St Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College PTA from 1979 to 1982.
Earlier this year he was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for his services to Maori and education.
His whanau will receive the QSM on his behalf at a ceremony this month.
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox said Mr Panapa saw education and schooling as a foundation for improving the life of Maori.
Ms Fox said the QSM is a fitting tribute to his life’s work.
