NZ Aid tops up Caritas programme

The New Zealand Aid programme has confirmed its support for a Caritas Aotearoa programme, and will match every dollar Caritas raises for this with three extra dollars.

The Caritas update for Winter, 2021, stated that the programme, called He Oranga Taurikura — A Thriving Life — is a five-year effort, working with local communities in the Pacific and South East Asia.

“We can make your donation of $1 become $4, which will go towards our work of overcoming poverty, protecting lives, and relieving suffering across seven countries, impacting thousands of lives,” the update stated.

He Oranga Taurikura will see Caritas work with partners and local communities in “creating thriving new lives”.

It will continue its work to “reduce the impact of poverty, with a focus on girls and women, refugees and migrants, and indigenous peoples”.

The update noted that He Oranga Taurikura would reach an estimated 130,000 people, and that 70 per cent of the funding would go to the Pacific.

A post on the Caritas facebook page on July 8 also mentioned sustainable development and environmental protection in connection with the programme.

Also in the Winter update was an article explaining that the theme for Social Justice week in September this year would be “A Culture of Encounter: BE the Church”.

“In our daily lives, all of us encounter others in different and unique ways. As we reflect on these encounters, and how they enable us to be the Church, we must always remember that we are all made in the image of God, and have an inherent and immeasurable worth and dignity. We are called to love and respect God’s creation — including all those around us.”
