Gospel ‘refresher’ for Hamilton diocese priests

17 Fr Byrne

The priests of Hamilton diocese attended their annual gathering in Taupo recently.

Fr Mark Field told NZ Catholic that a guest speaker, Australian Jesuit scholar Fr Brendan Byrne, spoke to the priests.

“He spoke on the origins of the term ‘Gospel’, the Kingdom (or Rule) of God, and then took us through the Gospel portrait of Jesus given by each of the evangelists and explained how each was unique to itself,” Fr Field said.
“It was probably best described as a Gospel ‘refresher’.”

Fr Bryne had previously spoken at a gathering of priests of the diocese in 2007, when they met at Okoroire, near Matamata.

Fr Field said he believes Fr Byrne is currently writing a book on St Paul.

During their time together, the Hamilton priests also gathered each evening with the people of St Patrick’s parish, Taupo, for Mass in their parish church.
