The previous Dunedin vicar general, Msgr Paul Mahoney, died late last year.
Since 2008, Fr Dooley has been parish priest of Mosgiel and Green Island parishes. He was previously a spiritual director at the national seminary.
According to The Tablet report, the position of vicar general carries with it the title “Monsignor”. But Fr Michael has expressed a preference for that title to be limited to some formal occasions.
“In most situations, he will continue to be known as Fr Michael,” The Tablet stated.
