If fundraising keeps going well, it is aimed to have St Mary of the Angels Church in central Wellington
open again by Easter 2017.
The church has been shut since July 2013, after planned strengthening work was brought forward in the wake of the Seddon earthquake.
In a January interview with the Dominion Post, parish priest Fr Barry Scannell said $7 million had been raised, with $2.5 million to go.
The newspaper report said strengthening work began in March 2015 after about a third of the funding target was raised, including a promise of about $500,000 from Wellington City ratepayers.
The strengthening work has reportedly been attracting interest from those at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Christchurch.
