For the four Sundays of Advent, youngsters at St Mary’s School, Wanganui, were busily making
symbols for the parish Jesse tree at their Liturgy of the Word.

Each Sunday, five decorations are presented to the congregation, then hung on the Jesse tree
while the commentator gives an explanation of each one. Each decoration represents people
who have been involved in God’s plan of salvation, and major stories in the Old Testament.
Beginning with the first symbol of the globe, we’re reminded that God made the Earth. Other symbols are the apple and serpent and how our first parents disobeyed God, the rainbow reminding us that Noah built the ark to save the people from the flood, and Sarah’s tent and her longing to have a baby. The ram tells the story of Isaac and the shepherd’s crook represents Samuel’s call from God to leadership.
A note of explanation accompanies each ornament and serves as a reflective piece for those who want to pause during this busy time of year to spiritually prepare for Christmas.
