PALMERSTON NORTH — Bishops, priests and people from the diocese of Palmerston North gathered at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on July 31 to celebrate the jubilees of Fr Paddy Kinsella, SM (60 years), Fr Dominic Heslin (50 years) and Fr Paul Kerridge (50 years).
The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Charles Drennan assisted by the jubilarians and parish priest Fr Peter Fahy.
Fr Kinsella is now retired and living in Taradale, Hawke’s Bay. Fr Heslin, whose most recent appointment was as Marton’s parish priest, now lives in retirement in Taranaki and Fr Paul Kerridge lives in Waipukurau, Central Hawke’s Bay, where he is still active in parish work.
In his homily, Fr John Dykes said the Mass was one of thanksgiving — particularly thanking Paddy, Paul and Dominic for answering the call and saying “yes” a collective 181 years ago (since they began their training).
He said the three men were ordained before the Second Vatican Council and nothing in their training prepared them for the decisions of the council and the host of changes it introduced.
He thanked God for calling the trio and thanked them for responding to the call.
At the conclusion of Mass, Bishop Drennan said: “Isn’t it great that we have been gifted with Frs Paddy, Paul and Dominic,” and led the congregation in a round of applause.
