ProLife Auckland is thanking supporters for ensuring the upholding of free speech, and that it is able to continue as an affiliated club at Auckland University.
A crowded quad at the university from 1 to 2pm on July 18 heard a number of speakers against and for the motion to disaffiliate ProLife Auckland.
The disaffiliation motion was passed at a special meeting of the Auckland University Students Association several weeks earlier, without ProLife Auckland even being advised the meeting was being held.
Disaffiliation would have meant that the prolife club would no longer have been an official university club and would not have been able to take part in clubs’ week or enjoy other privileges other university clubs have.
ProLife Auckland president Amy Blowers posted on the organisation’s Facebook page after the meeting: “Success! Thank you so much for everyone who helped out to ensure this resounding victory for free speech on campus!! 227 to 125 — thank you to everyone who voted, our wonderful speakers and everyone else who came along on the day.
“This is a brilliant result for freedom of expression and diversity of opinion on our campus.
