WELLINGTON — On February 22, the Holy Father accepted the resignation of the Bishop of Palmerston North, Bishop Peter Cullinane, upon having reached the age limit of 75 years.
The Apostolic Nuncio and Delegate to New Zealand and the Pacific, Archbishop Charles Balvo, made an official announcement from Wellington on February 23. The archbishop’s message read:
“Dear Brother Bishops, Monsignors, Fathers,
“I have the honour to inform you that yesterday, 22 February 2012, the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Palmerston North presented by Bishop Peter J. Cullinane, upon having reached the age limit. He is succeeded by Coadjutor Bishop Charles Drennan.”
Bishop Drennan is to be installed as Bishop of Palmerston North at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Palmerston North, at 10.30am on March 17.
