DUNEDIN The $10 million redevelopment of the private Mercy Hospital in Dunedin has been opened and blessed and in some ways the redevelopment may be doubly blessed. A new two-storey building was officially opened by the Sisters of Mercy congregation leader, Sr Denise Fox, from Wellington. Dunedin Bishop Colin Campbell blessed the buildings and a plaque that commemorated the ceremony.
The redevelopment sees an expansion in the hospitals capacity to provide facilities for more operations. It provides administration facilities, an operating suite and wards with up to 66 beds to cater for both day surgery and stay-over patients.
The timing could not be more auspicious. The vision was to have facilities for a perceived need for extra surgery provided through private hospitals. Former chief executive Michael Woodhouse, who helped guide the development, is now a National MP and the party released a policy in September in favour of using private hospitals to reduce waiting lists in the public sector
The first patients were due to move into the new building on November 24.
