Acting CE appointed for Te Kupenga

Nathaniel Centre director Dr John Kleinsman has been appointed acting chief executive of Te Kupenga- Catholic Leadership Institute after Dr Areti Metuamate stepped down from the role.

Te Kupenga chair John Gallaher said Dr Kleinsman was asked to fill the position from July 6 until a new chief executive can be appointed. 

“John will be known to all of you as the director of the Nathaniel Centre and a member of the leadership team of Te Kupenga. He is someone the Te Kupenga board and the bishops know of and respect, and we are grateful that he has agreed to take on the responsibility,” Mr Gallaher said in his announcement. 

“The board is currently undertaking a search for a new CE, which is now our top priority. In the meantime, your support for Dr Kleinsman as acting CE is greatly appreciated,” he added. 

Mr Gallaher said Dr Metuamate will stay on to ensure a smooth transition, and to provide any necessary advice. 

He said the board also asked Dr Metuamate to continue to lead the St Columba Centre relocation project and the finalisation of the strategic plan, until a new chief executive is appointed.  

Dr Metuamate earlier told NZ Catholic he had resigned from his role due to family commitments. He had a two-year contract with Te Kupenga. 

He said he will continue to support Te Kupenga through his involvement in several of its projects, such as research into the history of Māori in the Catholic Church.
