WAITARUKE — One of 14 men trained and formed for the diaconate for Auckland diocese, Russell Larkin of Waitaruke, died on August 2, 16 days before he was due to be ordained.
Mr Larkin died suddenly on the Thursday afternoon. He was scheduled to be ordained to the diaconate in Waitaruke on August 18.
Mr Larkin is said to have had major heart surgery early this year.
Mr Larkin’s 13 diaconate confreres have only recently been ordained. Ten were ordained at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Auckland on July 14, and another three were ordained at Whangarei at the 10am Sunday Mass on July 29.
Many of the newly ordained deacons are expected to attend Mr Larkin’s funeral Mass some time next week.
The Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Patrick Dunn, and diocesan staff, extend their deepest sympathies to Mr Larkin’s family.
