Comment on Scale of abuse in New Zealand Catholic Church revealed in research project: 1680 reports of abuse since 1950 by Lilian Wilde https://nzcatholic.org.nz/2022/02/01/scale-of-abuse-in-new-zealand-catholic-church-revealed-in-research-project-1680-reports-of-abuse-since-1950/#comment-105976 Mon, 08 Apr 2024 22:24:17 +0000 https://nzcatholic.org.nz/?p=24726#comment-105976 I attended Addington Primary in Christchurch from 1958-1959 and received daily corporal punishment by Sister Mary Lucia when I was 12. She had taken over the form 2 class following disruptions by over-exuberant boys in our form 1 class the previous year. She had asked me to become a nun, and when I said no (I didnt believe I was worthy) she began using me to embarrass the naughty boys into submission. She did this by strapping me every time they were disruptive in class, obviously hoping to make them feel embarrassed or bad for my pain. Her strapping extended up my wrist and I had to pull my jersey over the welts as my mother would have sided with the “good nuns”. I still have my faith but am not a practising Catholic.

Comment on Vatican doctrine official says priestly celibacy should be optional by Anthony https://nzcatholic.org.nz/2024/01/15/vatican-doctrine-official-says-priestly-celibacy-should-be-optional/#comment-103849 Sun, 03 Mar 2024 04:12:26 +0000 https://nzcatholic.org.nz/?p=27719#comment-103849 My opinion is, that even in the protestant setting, the demand of lifelong ministerial/ pastoral profession is too great, and like as with the Amish, the position of teaching elder should be taken on for a limited time according to nomination, and ones willingness to be on ballot. This does not mean there isn’t a great need for a ministry that allows individuals time in settings of quiet apart from the world.
