My opinion is, that even in the protestant setting, the demand of lifelong ministerial/ pastoral profession is too great, and like as with the Amish, the position of teaching elder should be taken on for a limited time according to nomination, and ones willingness to be on ballot. This does not mean there isn’t a great need for a ministry that allows individuals time in settings of quiet apart from the world.

The notion of abstinence arose years ago with priesthood
copying trends in pagan fertility rites which required sexual
abstinence before the next day (pagan festivity), and this was
fine for Eucharist until it became a problem of celebration of
Eucharist daily. In this case it meant almost a permanent sexual
abstinence. Since this was impractical for married priests it meant
the best option would be celibacy.
This also runs parallel with scriptural comment on eunuchs -who
are made so for the kingdom of God.
While this dialogue continues, there remains the three vows of
poverty, chastity and obedience, against celibacy and obedience.
The idea of Franciscans arose because of radical poverty needed,
and St Benedict J. Labre also provides a serious departure from
certain trends. This was taken up by Sulpician priest Michel
Rodrigues who late became abbot, etc.
Not a simple situation easily solved by allowing for marrieds.
