I believe Catholics hold suicide to be a mortal sin as well as a profound human tragedy. And suicide is a consequence of repeated stigmatisation, marginalisation, discrimination and inequality, for LGBTQI+ individuals as much as other groups, such as people with disabilities. I have to admit, I do not find the ‘natural law’ argument against LGBTQI+ rights to be particularly convincing, especially given its somewhat dated Thomist/Augustinian/Aristotelian premodern and prescientific ethos. It seems that is not a unique position in contemporary New Zealand/Aotearoa society. All LGBTQI+ people want is equality and inclusion, whether in employment, accomodation, service provision, education and other social relationships. Is it so wrong to want that?
