We also went along as curious 2o-year-olds to the inaugural meeting of SPUC (Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child), held in Auckland’s Town Hall in 1970.

There was a huge crowd in attendance.

Dr Pat Dunn spoke, who became Bishop & Professor Sir William Liley.

If only we had battalions more like them. The first President of S.P.U.C. was Professor Sir William Liley, often referred to as the “Father of Foetology” for his ground-breaking treatment of infants within the womb. He was succeeded, in order, by Dr Diana Mason, lawyer Des Dalgety, Dame Marilyn Pryor and then Peter Barry-Martin, the last male president prior to Bernard. A most distinguished collection of decent human beings.

I served as the Society’s National Office manager and National Secretary for 15 years up until 2006, assisting Carmel Armstrong, Jenny Street, and Josephine Reeves who were presidents during that period. During my final Conference, Josephine was succeeded by Annetta Moran.

Men have been telling women what to do with their bodies for centuries.
Let the woman make the difficult decision about her body and the baby she is gestating.
